The Jazz Vespers is an all-inclusive, welcoming, meditative evening service of word and music in the form of a jazz tinged, original liturgy, punctuated with appropriate jazz standards throughout, performed by professional musicians and vocalists. The St. James Jazz Vespers has been held once a month for many years, with each service featuring a special guest artist and backed by a jazz trio. The service is free, a good-will offering is suggested, all are welcome.

Mike Horsfall has enjoyed a successful and diverse musical career for over 40 years, serving as a concert soloist, accompanist, musical director, educator, composer, arranger, and recording artist on both piano and vibraphone. He was educated at Central Washington University, the University of Washington, and Marylhurst University. Mike is probably best known for his work with the vibes-bass-drums trio named Tall Jazz, a group he co-founded in 1989. In 2010, after more than two decades of performances, recordings, and clinics, Tall Jazz was voted into the Oregon Jazz Society’s Hall of Fame.
He also directs two jazz vespers series, one at St. James Lutheran in Portland, and one at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas Episcopal Church in Vancouver, WA. These services feature guest artists backed by his trio.
Mike has collaborated on large-scale projects with several of Portland’s top artists: Darrell Grant, Valerie Day, Rebecca Kilgore & Ellen Vanderslice, Marv & Rindy Ross’ Trail Band, and Pink Martini. He has been commissioned by PDX Jazz to put on two different concerts, and has been a regular participant in the Portland Jazz Festival and the Oregon Coast Jazz Party.
He has performed and/or recorded with a large number of world class musicians, including Chuck Redd, Karla Harris, Marilyn Keller, Randy Porter, and Todd Strait. At jazz festivals, he has performed with Anat Cohen, Kurt Elling, Janis Siegel, Terrill Stafford, Holly Hofman, and Storm Large, among others. In addition to performing, Mike is an avid music educator, serving on the faculties at Willamette University, Mt. Hood Community College, Clark College and Oregon Episcopal School.
Noah Simpson
In the short time Noah Simpson has lived in Portland, he has established himself as one of the top trumpet players in the area. Energetic, dynamic, and attentive describe Noah Simpson’s modern approach to contemporary trumpet playing. Simpson is celebrated as a performer, composer, and forward thinking improviser, who has performed with artist like George Benson, Bernard Purdie, and Ron Artis II.
