JAZZ IN THE SCHOOLS ART EXHIBIT

We invite you to come by the Portland Art Museum from 10am – 5pm.
Many wonderful artistic contributions will be on display at the Sunken Ballroom. This event showcases the creative spirit amongst Portland area schools and students and is the culmination of the Jazz in the Schools program for the 2020–2021 school year. The exhibit will be a one-way path and masks will be required.

This year was all about flexibility — from school shutdowns to new safety measures, teachers everywhere had to get creative about providing our students with adequate education — and our Jazz in the Schools program was no different! Although it was a tough year, we were able to expand our Jazz in the School program to encompass the whole school year, and served many new school sites!

Whether in person or digitally, students learned about the origins of jazz, its significant figures, its major contributions to American history, and ultimately its connection to visual art — specifically the designs found on jazz album covers during the mid-20th century. Throughout the duration of the program, jazz music served as the soundtrack and inspiration for student interpretations of what jazz “looks like” on a 12″ x 12″ blank canvas (which is the size of a record album cover).

This year, we served students from Tillamook to Gresham and everywhere in between, visiting 17 schools, across 11 districts, including the Oregon Youth Authority and Northwest Regional Education Service District!
