‘JAZZ LECTURE SERIES’ presentation with Ashley Kahn and Marilyn Keller

in MHCC Band Room (AC2102)

+ accompanying Noah Simpson Quartet Performance 8:30 PM

Jazz in the world of film and television has a long, colorful, and varied history -two creative legacies that came of age more than 100 years ago, and have been working it out ever since. The results of this overlap have ranged from the sublime and supreme, to the cornball and ridiculous. This discussion will be fun and informative, looking at examples of all the above – including a deep dive into the story of one of the most groundbreaking and historic marriages of jazz and cinema (Miles Davis and the 1958 Louis Malle film, Ascenseur pour l’échafaud aka Elevator to the Gallows) and a look at the current crop of award-winning movies about jazz, and those using jazz to help tell their stories.
