INDABA IS newly composed improvised music and jazz created by South Africa’s blooming new school jazz scene and produced and managed by Creative Directors, award-winning pianist Thandi Ntuli and ‘The Brother Moves On’ bandleader Siyabonga Mthembu.

“A thoughtful examination of the several routes along which modern South African jazz has arrived and a thought-provoking pointer towards where it may be going. It is, also, a lot of fun.” All About Jazz ★★★★

Saturday February 27th features performances and talks with:

  • Thandi Ntuli Septet featuring Thandi Ntuli (Keys & Vox), Shane Cooper (Bass), Keenan Ahrendts (Guitar), Nompumelelo Nhlapo (Percussion), Sphelelo Mazibuko (Drums), Mthunzi Mvubu (Alto Sax & Flute), Sthembiso Bhengu (Trumpet)
  • The Brother Moves On feat. Bokani Dyer, Mthunzi Mvubu and Muhammad Dawjee perform their Matsuli Records retrospective “Tolika Mtoliki” an ode to music made between 1960 and present featuring tracks by Soujth African legends  Johnny Dyani, Batsumi, Ezra Ngcukana, Madala Kunene, Phillip Tabane, and Malombo + an original tribute to Moses Molelekwa.
  • Sibusile Xaba in conversation with Rutendo Ngara a healer and advocate of the Indigenous Knowledge Systems about healing as re-membering.

INDABA IS a compilation of the freshest current South African improvised music and jazz (on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings) the third in a series of albums highlighting the dynamic global jazz scene.

Like the cosmopolitan musical ferment in Johannesburg, this new compilation illustrates the many legacies each generation of musicians have inherited and features Bokani Dyer, Lwanda Gogwana, The Brother Moves On,Thandi Ntuli, The Wretched, Sibusile Xaba, The Ancestors and Iphupho likaBiko.

Thandi Ntuli and Siyabonga Mthembu are an evanescent presence on each of the pieces, perfectly illustrating the role of musicians-turning-creative directors.

The Brother Moves On is a performance art ensemble from Johannesburg Gauteng. The group was founded somewhere between the years 2008 and 2010 by broad-based artist Nkululeko Mthembu and his brother Siyabonga Mthembu. TBMO began as a self-proclaimed art movement mainly of graphic and fine artists and since began incorporating instrumentalists for the live performance environment.
