“A musician intent on blurring the future and past”
-All About Jazz
Trumpeter and composer Cyrus Nabipoor aims to tell stories. Central to his approach are the Taoist concepts of duality, equilibrium and wu wei. Unable to be pinned down, he flows between genres, but Nabipoor’s unique voice is unmistakable. Warm and lyrical, with a unique sense of phrasing, he balances focused clarity with daring exploration. In both composition and improvisation, melody reigns. Through his pairing of trumpet and electronics, Nabipoor bridges the conceived dichotomy of nature & technology while seeking new tonal possibilities.
In his latest release, ‘Live at the Marigny Opera House’, Nabipoor makes a powerful debut as a bandleader. Recorded live in New Orleans, the album showcases his compositional prowess as well as his mastery of the horn. It features a stellar lineup of musicians who each shine in their respective roles.
“‘Live at the Marigny Opera House’ is an exhilarating debut from an artist we can expect to keep pushing boundaries.” -KMHD
‘Live at the Marigny Opera House’ is a finely paced, well crafted, quietly revealing debut with a keen sense of smoldering tradition and youthful investigation.” -All About Jazz
In addition to his solo projects, Cyrus is a member of Noruz, Brass Lightning, Doombalaya, Sexual Thunder, and Outer Core. He is a frequent collaborator of Korgy & Bass, Barra Brown, Jeff Albert and Jon Roniger. Cyrus co-produces ‘Lore’, a multisensory storytelling performance series, with visual artist Ida Floreak.
Cyrus has worked with Jamison Ross, Elle King, Tarriona “Tank” Ball, James Singleton, Jason Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Johnny Vidacovich, Eric “Benny” Bloom, Michael Ray, Mike Dillon, Stanton Moore, Larry Sieberth, Dean Ween, Brad Walker and Peach Tree Rascals.
Born and raised in Portland OR, Cyrus Nabipoor began playing trumpet at age 11. He wanted to play trombone, but it wouldn’t fit on his bike. As an adolescent Cyrus was taught by Cynthia Plank and trumpeter Derek Sims. In high school he joined the Alan Jones Academy of Music. Cyrus holds a Bachelor of Music from Loyola University New Orleans, where he graduated magna cum laude and was awarded outstanding undergraduate in both Jazz and Brass. While at Loyola, he studied with Nick Volz, Tony Dagradi and Jimbo Walsh. Cyrus also spent a very formative term at the Grieg Academy in Bergen, Norway studying with ECM legend Per Jørgensen and Martin Winter (Bergen Philharmonic). In 2015, Cyrus was awarded the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Scholarship.
Cyrus is endorsed by Edward’s Trumpets. He has partnerships with PreSonus & Horn FX.
