Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah brings his expanded and holistic vision of music as a healing power and source of wisdom to the world through a careful selection of artists. This begins with Weedie Braimah, born in Ghana and raised in East St Louis with deep roots in New Orleans. Widely regarded as the premiere voice of the Djembe, Braimah’s lifelong quest and professional career in the study of African folklore and cultural music of the African diaspora has led him to his first full length album just out on Adjuah’s Stretch Music label on Ropeadope.

Axiom, Adjuah’s 2020 release, has been nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 63rd Grammy® Awards. Additionally, Adjuah has been nominated Best Improvised Jazz Solo for his performance on one of the Axiom’s tracks, Guinnevere. Recorded live at New York’s famed Blue Note in March 2020, became the last live performance of the year for Adjuah and his band due to the start of the global pandemic.

Axiom continues Adjuah’s mission to unify people via their musical and cultural voices by tearing down the sonic and social constructs that separate them. As a Chieftain in the Black masking culture of New Orleans, he has been deeply committed to turning identity politics, as it is used in music, on its ear. Axiom, as with Adjuah’s other recordings, seeks to excavate and update hidden histories in sound by displaying a sonic tapestry that illuminates the har-melodic movements found within rhythm.

Chief Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah  is a two-time Edison Award winning and five-time Grammy® Award nominated musician, composer and producer. He is the nephew of NEA Jazz Master, jazz innovator and legendary sax man, Donald Harrison, Jr.

Weedie Braimah is widely regarded as the premiere voice of the Djembe. Utilizing his amazing speed and dexterity, breathtaking skill, and breadth of knowledge, he ushers listeners through a rhythmic journey of Africa and the Diaspora. Braimah descends from a long lineage of drummers & composers, which includes his mother, Ann Morris, a respected Jazz drummer, his father, Oscar Sulley Braimah, a world-renowned composer and master drummer, and great-uncle, Jazz drumming icon, Idris Muhammad.

Currently, the Grammy nominated Djembefola records and tours with Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Baaba Maal, Trombone Shorty and Bokante. Braimah also leads his own band, Weedie Braimah & The Hands of Time, through which he elevates percussion as the front-facing music of the diaspora focusing on instruments like Kora, Ngoni, Balafon, Djembe, Dunun, Tama, Sabar, Bass, and Electric Guitar.
