A multimedia presentation with acclaimed author Ashley Kahn, in association with PDX Jazz and Mt. Hood Community College Music.
Too often, the roles and relative significance of these two towering figures are misunderstood and overshadowed – John’s legend overshadowing that of his equally significant wife and widow, and even his own message. This presentation employs music and video excerpts to elevate and throw a light on John Coltrane, his music and universal message, and to better understand (and celebrate) the role of his wife, the multi-instrumentalist and spiritual leader Turiyasangitananda Alice Coltrane. How did each weave a spiritual focus into their music? How did their musical and spiritual paths converge, and then diverge? What was the core message they sought to convey through their music, and their lives?
