We at the PDX Jazz community are devastated to hear about the huge loss in our musical family with the recent passing of Carlton Jackson. Aside from being a top drummer and long-running host of KMHD’s “The Message,” Carlton was an easy going spirit that always brightened the room with his deep-seated knowledge of musical theory and Portland history. Our last hang with him was during this past February’s PDX Jazz Festival following the Marcus Shelby show ‘Black Music and Freedom’, where he was the featured drummer. As always, Carlton sounded great and was a sincere pleasure to be around. Our deepest condolences to the entire Jackson family.
