John Daversa & Tal Cohen: The Art of Duo Album Release Party

Multi-Grammy award-winning trumpeter John Daversa and acclaimed jazz pianist Tal Cohen share their unique chemistry of spontaneity and improvisation. The performance includes soulful and enchanting melodies with a fresh interpretation of the classic duo format.

John Daversa is and American Jazz trumpeter, electronic valve instrument (EVI) player, composer, arranger, conductor, bandleader, producer and educator. He is the son of Jay Davera, trumpeter for Stan Kenton/ L.A. studio musician and Mary Ann Daversa, music educator and pianist. Daversa has degrees from UCLA, Cal Arts and a doctorate from USC. He is chair of studio music at University of Miami, Frost School of Music.

Tal Cohen Tal Cohen is a Grammy award winning jazz pianist currently located in Miami. He has received much acclaim including winning the Barry Harris National Piano Competition and was the recipient of the prestigious Freedman Fellowship. He performed to a sold out crowd at the Sydney Opera House. Recently, Tal Cohen has been playing around the Globe with Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby, Ignacio Berroa, Joe Lovano and others. he currently leads his own ensemble which has performed at Iconic jazz festivals and venues that include Jazzbez Jazz Festival (Ukraine), Detroit Jazz Festival, Melbourne Jazz Festival (Australia), a three week residency at the Black Cat (San Fransisco).

PYJO Vanguard Big Band

PYJO Vanguard members are a mixture of Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra alumni, professionals, band directors, college students & a few top high school musicians. The Vanguard is known for tackling challenging big band music of all eras. At this show they will play original music by John Daversa, Gary Barone, Charles Mingus and Charley Gray’s arrangements of Freddie Hubbard & Woody Shaw’s music. The PYJO Vanguard has become an important establishment in Portland’s music scene. PYJO was founded by Ben & Michelle Medler in 2001 training over 1000 students in the art of Jazz.
