The Jazz Vespers is an all-inclusive, meditative evening service of word and music in the form of a jazz tinged original liturgy, punctuated with jazz standards throughout.   The St. James Jazz Vespers has been held once a month for many years, featuring some of Portland’s finest jazz musicians.  The service is free (a goodwill offering is suggested), and all are welcome.

Mike Horsfall has enjoyed a successful and diverse musical career for over 40 years, serving as a concert soloist, accompanist, musical director, educator, composer, arranger, and recording artist on both piano and vibraphone. He was educated at Central Washington University, the University of Washington, and Marylhurst University. Mike is probably best known for his work with the vibes-bass-drums trio named Tall Jazz, a group he co-founded in 1989. In 2010, after more than two decades of performances, recordings, and clinics, Tall Jazz was voted into the Oregon Jazz Society’s Hall of Fame.

He also directs two jazz vespers series, one at St. James Lutheran in Portland, and one at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas Episcopal Church in Vancouver, WA. These services feature guest artists backed by his trio.

Mike has collaborated on large-scale projects with several of Portland’s top artists: Darrell Grant, Valerie Day, Rebecca Kilgore & Ellen Vanderslice, Marv & Rindy Ross’ Trail Band, and Pink Martini. He has been commissioned by PDX Jazz to put on two different concerts, and has been a regular participant in the Portland Jazz Festival and the Oregon Coast Jazz Party.

He has performed and/or recorded with a large number of world class musicians, including Chuck Redd, Karla Harris, Marilyn Keller, Randy Porter, and Todd Strait. At jazz festivals, he has performed with Anat Cohen, Kurt Elling, Janis Siegel, Terrill Stafford, Holly Hofman, and Storm Large, among others. In addition to performing, Mike is an avid music educator, serving on the faculties at Willamette University, Mt. Hood Community College, Clark College and Oregon Episcopal School.

Marilyn Keller is a 2016 Jazz Society of Oregon Hall of Fame Inductee, and 38-year veteran of music and stage performance in Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Pop, Blues, and theater, nationally and internationally. Her musical roots are diverse. Marilyn has built a career that has taken her as a feature artist to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Russia and the UK for concerts, festivals, nightclubs and recording work. Her voice can be heard on multiple recordings, movie sound tracks, commercials and documentaries. Marilyn’s formative jazz training was as a member of the Mt. Hood Community College Vocal Jazz Ensemble and as the vocalist fronting the award-winning MHCC Jazz Lab Band. Marilyn remains active, performing with Mike Horsfall, Darrell Grant, Don Latarski,, Tom Grant, Black Swan Classic Jazz Band, Pressure Point Band and the Augustana Jazz Quartet, among many others.
